Through the work sessions and analysis of the volume of pedestrian and vehicular traffic that this building would generate, would be more volume than the entire campus. The original idea of putting the building behind existing facilities would pose a serious challenge to the entire traffic pattern of the entire campus. The FNDA team proposed an innovative solution by relocating the main entrance and introducing a new arrival and drop-off area complete with entry courtyards, porte cochere, waiting areas and a cafeteria and extensive landscape areas.

The exterior courtyards take advantage of the great weather in Nairobi and the elevator tower was brought forward to become a beacon which would create a landmark identifying the centre of the campus. The main reception for the complex would be positioned at this location. This complex site planning solution proposed by FNDA would transform the campus identity and ease the present circulation problems.

The building comprises of a radiation therapy department, central sterile supply department, radiology department, intensive care units, operating theatres, cath lab and maternity department. The project is currently 4 months away from completion.

This was the first of a series of buildings to be built on the original hospital campus which now has university status. The site originally allocated for the building was “stuck” behind existing buildings. This project went through extensive and detailed idea sessions, work sessions and charettes to discuss issues of long range master planning impact of existing facilities on the new project, the type and nature of circulation, the medical and academic facilities that were required. FNDA undertook the programming aspects of the University building and was able to deliver the final building within 200 square feet of the programmed area.
